2022 Reading Challenge: Checking In
We’re more than halfway through the year now, so I thought I would check in and see how our Reading Goals are doing!
At the beginning of the year, I made a goal for myself (through the GoodReads Reading Challenge) of reading just eight books. Every year I make myself a higher goal and every year I inevitably do not reach said goal. So this year I kept the list short. Or at least, I tried to.
When it comes to the book section in literally any store, I have little to no self-control. …Okay, fine, I have no self-control. I may have picked up one or two books that weren’t on my initial reading list for the year. And where’s the harm in that, I ask you? If I were to stick to my original plan of making my reading goal match my TBR list, technically my goal should be thirteen books now. But I’ve decided to keep my goal at just eight books for two reasons: First, I know I won’t hit that goal by the end of the year. And two, it will be much more satisfying to pass my original goal, even if it’s just by one book.
As of right now I’ve read four books this year. It doesn’t feel like a lot to me but Dune was very long. That one alone took me most of the year to get through. Once I finished that I started speeding up through my list a little. Here’s what I’ve read so far, in order of favourite to least favourite:
1. The Song of Achilles-Madeline Miller
2. Dune-Frank Herbert
3. The Lost Apothecary-Sarah Penner
4. Cain’s Jawbone-E. Powys Mather
Now I’m not saying I disliked any of these books. In fact, they’ve all been wonderful so far. This is just the order in which I enjoyed them the most. I’ve written reviews for a few of these books, which I’ve linked above. And at the end of the year I plan on going into more detail about each book I’ve read and what I enjoyed about them.
In order to technically “win” my Reading Challenge for the year, I need to read four more books. Seems simple enough, but just to be safe, I have a plan. I’m bringing back my Two-Book System. Basically, all that means is that I have a “Day-Time Book” and a “Bed-Time Book”. I used to do this all the time but kind of fell out of the habit. I have a book I read during the day, usually on my lunch break at work, and I have a book I read before bed. I’m doing this partly to catch up on my reading goal, and partly to try and break my habit of being online or watching TV before bed.
As of right now I’m currently reading The Duke & I (Bridgertons #1) by Julia Quinn, and I’m about to start For the Wolf (Wilderwoods #1) by Hannah F. Whitten as my “Bed-Time Book”. I’ll be going into more detail about my thoughts on each of them once I’ve finished.
So, that’s where I’m at with my 2022 Reading Challenge. I’m feeling pretty confident that I’ll at the very least meet my goal, if not surpass it. But I guess we’ll see. If you’re participating in a Reading Challenge this year, let me know how you’re doing! What was goal? What’s been your favourite books so far? Do you have any recommendations? I want to hear it all!
Until next time, Nerds!
