Novel Chronicles: Chapter One
This new writing endeavor has definitely been off to a slow start.
My goal for July and Camp NaNoWrimo was to write twenty-five thousand words, but I can already tell that isn’t going to happen. Because of my work schedule it’s hard to find the time (and energy) to write every single day. And rather than spew out a lot of garbage just to hit a word count, I’d rather make a little time here and there to write something I’m proud of. So instead of a word goal, I’m trying to make sure I write at least twice a week for an hour or two. A.K.A: Write on my days off.
So far I’ve been somewhat successful. I’ve started working on essentially combining the ideas for two older stories that I think will actually meld pretty well. There’s no title yet (I can worry about that some other time) but I’ve been referring to it as a Ghost-Mystery-Noir Story. I know, it’s a mouthful. But that pretty much nails the style I’m going for. I took some characters from an older NaNo story and added them into this one, which I had started for NaNo 2021. I also realized that the villain idea I had for the older story actually fit perfectly for the plot in this one. So I kind of killed two birds with one stone. I was able to salvage some older characters I loved and finally figure out some of the plot for this story that I had been struggling with.
I tend to have the problem of knowing what’s going on in the middle of the story but not really knowing how to start or where it’s going. Now I’ve more or less figured out where this plot is heading. I just need to trudge my way through some of the beginning bits to get to a good place. A lot of my earlier wordcount tends to get scrapped, but I think that’s fine. It’s all just a journey to get to the good stuff, you know?
So, yeah. It’s been slow-going so far, but I’m really confident and excited about what’s in store for this project. Hopefully in Chapter Two of The Novel Chronicles I’ll have a little more to tell you about the story and some of the characters. In the meantime, it’s back to work for me!
